The 3rd Scientific Data Management and Publication Workshop for Sokoine University of Agriculture was held for graduate students during the week of March 15th to March 22nd 2016. The purpose of the workshop was to provide students with concrete guidance on how to organize, manage and preserve data collected from their respective projects. The training was set up by iAGRI and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). The workshop was organized into two sessions. The first session was a journal publication write-shop on literature utilization, presenting results and discussion, steps in writing and features of journal manuscripts. The second session covered the use of software techniques for data entry, retrieval in Microsoft Excel/genstat/SPSS and exploratory data analysis.
The facilitators of the workshop were African Crop Science Journal editors, Dr. J.S. Tenywa (Editor-in-Chief) and Dr. P.M. Nampala (Science Editor). A total of 45 students sponsored by iAGRI, primarily from Cohort IV participated in in the short-term training. The training provided students with required software, interpretive knowledge and skills that would enable them to create tables and figures to analyze data from tables and figures. The workshop introduced students to other aspects of data skills including data management to support their graduate research projects.
